President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine launched an incursion into Russian territory to reform justice and set pressure on Russian forces.
(The Post News)- On August 6, the Ukrainian forces launched their largest cross-border assault on Russia’s Kursk region since the war began, exposing significant vulnerabilities in Russia’s defences.Â
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that this incursion is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to reform justice and apply increased pressure on Russian forces.
Zelensky told Ukraine that the incursion into Russian territory is to reform justice and set pressure on Russian forces.
The attack, involving several Ukrainian brigades and advanced Western equipment, triggered a mass evacuation of civilians and disrupted Russian military operations.
Zelenskyy praised the operation as a strategic move to pressure Russia and strengthen Ukraine’s negotiating position.
The surprise incursion has forced tens of thousands of civilians to flee as Russian forces struggle to repel the assault.
As of August 11, Moscow’s forces had been engaged in six days of intense fighting against Kyiv’s largest incursion into Russian territory, leaving southwestern Russia vulnerable until reinforcements arrived.
Meanwhile, Belarus, a close ally of Moscow, has deployed additional troops to its border, accusing Ukraine of airspace violations.
In a video posted on social media, Zelenskyy announced that he had discussed the operation with Ukrainian Supreme Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
He vowed to respond in kind after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbouring country in February 2022.
Zelenskyy explained that he had received several reports from Supreme Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi about measures to shift the front line and the war to the aggressors’ territory.
The Russian Defence Ministry said on August 11 that it had destroyed 14 Ukrainian drones and four Tochka-U tactical ballistic missiles overnight over the Kursk region, as well as 18 drones over other Russian territories frequently attacked by Ukraine.
In a statement, the Defence Ministry called the ground attacks “barbaric” and said they made no military sense.
While Ukraine occupies only a few tens of square kilometres of Russian territory without claiming it, Russia controls more than 100,000 square kilometres of Ukraine’s internationally recognised territory.
