(The Post News)- In Durban police launched a massive crackdown on hijacked buildings, arresting over 100 illegal foreigners and seizing a cache of illicit goods. The multi-disciplinary operation, involving various law enforcement agencies, targeted several notorious hotspots in the Durban CBD and Point areas.
As the raid unfolded on Tuesday morning, police officers, accompanied by their counterparts from metro police, home affairs, and correctional services, swooped in on six hijacked buildings, uncovering a treasure trove of contraband. The seized items included counterfeit United States dollars amounting to millions of rands, alcohol, drugs, and illegal weapons, as well as suspected undocumented foreign nationals.
Two of the raided buildings were found to have illegal electricity and water connections, which were subsequently disconnected. One suspect was arrested for possession of cocaine, crystal meth, and cash, highlighting the entrenched nature of criminal activity in these hijacked buildings.
According to South African Police Services spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the operation resulted in the arrest of at least 123 illegal foreign nationals, with the recovery of counterfeit US dollars equivalent to R4.1 million. Furthermore, 117 rounds of ammunition of different calibers of firearms were seized, indicating a potentially larger arsenal at play.
