Clarens community demands enough security for the safety of the Klein Caledon pump station to fail the plans of the thieves who keep vandalising the station.
(The Post News)- The Clarens residents in the Free State are happy once again after spending almost two years without having a pump station supplying them directly with water. This follows the successful completion of the refurbishment of an electrical panel and a pump at the Klein Caledon pump station that was vandalized in 2022.Â
According to the Dihlabeng local municipal head of communication office and marketing manager, Tshediso Maitse, the municipality is committed to ensuring the Clarens community has water through the period of the closure of the tunnel.
“The successful refurbishment of the Klein Caledon pump station will ensure the municipality would be able to pump water to the Townlands Dam during the rainy season,” Maitse elaborates.
In contrast with the new project, Maitse pointed out there is an ongoing project funded by MIG which is currently at 33% progress. “The project is scheduled to be completed in June 2025. Hence, it does not affect the closure of the Lesotho Highlands tunnel that is scheduled for the 1st of October 2024. The currently refurbished pump station will still be able to pump water to the Townlands dam while the construction is still underway,” adds Maitse.
However, the residents are worried about whether there will be enough security to protect the Klein Caledon pump station from being vandalized again.
“The best thing should be done is to deploy much-needed security to the pump station so that no more vandalism would take place. We cannot suffer from getting the services because of the thieves who must be arrested and serve a long time in prison,” this is according to Mokete Mofokeng, one of the residents.
