On Wednesday, six elephants escape from Kruger National Park.
(The Post News)- A group of six elephants escaped from Kruger National Park on Wednesday, causing a stir in the nearby community of Mkhuhlu, outside Hazyview. The elephants crossed the river, which is currently experiencing low water levels, and were first spotted around 11:00 near Hoxani College and Elegant Garage. They were later seen roaming the Mkhuhlu area.
Emergency personnel arrived at the scene to escort the elephants back to Kruger National Park.
South African National Parks spokesperson Ike Phaahla confirmed the reports and stated that an attempt to capture the elephants is underway. However, community members blocked the way, making the situation dangerous.
Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) spokesperson Simphiwe Shingube said their attempts to push the elephants back to Kruger Park failed twice, partly due to disruptions from community members and motorists. A helicopter was seen flying over the area, attempting to herd the elephants towards the Phabeni gate, but the operation was unsuccessful.
Eyewitnesses reported that one person from the community was injured by an elephant when they tried to hunt them down. MTPA has warned the community not to attempt to kill the elephants and to allow their team to work without disturbance.
The situation is being monitored, and an update is expected once the police have the situation under control. The escape of the six elephants has raised concerns about the safety of both the community and the animals. Authorities are working to resolve the situation and return the elephants to the park.
