The accused, Mlodi Mpofana, was found guilty of robbing the bank of millions of rands and sentenced to ten years behind bars.
(The Post News)- On Tuesday, 10 September 2024, the Bethlehem magistrates court found the accused, Mlodi Mpofana (32) guilty of vehicle finance fraud and was sentenced for fraud and theft. Mpofana’s conviction originates from an incident that took place in June 2021.Â
According to the Hawks spokesperson in the Free State, Captain Christopher Singo, it was reported that Mpofana approached a car dealership in Harrismith, Free State and applied for the financing of the five vehicles to the value of R3 241 862. He then submitted all the required documents to the sales department at the dealership.
The sales department forwarded these documents to the bank so that the bank could finance the vehicles. The application was approved by the bank and the accused was requested to bring the identity document and the driver’s licence for the collection of the vehicles.
Songo continues saying the accused collected all the vehicles after submitting all the required documents. During the verification process of his documents by the finance department, it was discovered that the bank statement and proof of income were fraudulent.
The matter was then reported to the Hawk’s serious commercial crime investigation team based in Bethlehem for further investigations.
Mpofana was arrested on 03 August 2022 and all vehicles were recovered by the bank. The court sentenced him to ten years imprisonment wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of the same offence during the period of suspension. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
