11-year-old girl tragically killed in a hijacking after being ran over while hiding under mom’s car by four armed suspects in Malvern, Durban, Imsge: SAPS
(The Post News)- An 11-year-old girl is tragically murdered when an outing turned into a gruesome hijacking on Wednesday night. The incident happened at a fast food outlet on the Main Road in Malvern, Durban, around 20:30.
“It is with great sadness that we release the news of the death of 11-year-old Zara Ramsamy, the daughter of Shaida and Barnes. She was killed in a carjacking in Manchester. Please uphold this precious family in prayer,” Ramsamy’s church stated in a news release.
According to authorities, two children were spotted seated in the family Fortuner while the mother and grandmother were standing at the entrance of McDonald’s not far from the car. They were then approached by four armed men who got out of a silver vehicle, who started demanding keys from the mother while the children got out as soon as they realised what was transpiring.
The 11-year-old girl quickly hid under the Fortuner while her brother ran away from the car. The armed men hopped into the vehicle, and while driving, they ran over the little girl, who later died from her serious injuries at a hospital. The hijackers abandoned the Fortuner and recovered in Chesterville.
“Police are investigating cases of murder and carjacking, following an incident in which an 11-year-old girl was run over by a vehicle that was being hijacked at a parking lot of a fast food outlet in Malvern on Wednesday evening,” stated Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, KwaZulu Natal police spokesperson.
South African Police Services (SAPS) have been asked for a comment and will be disclosed once received. The incident was described as unbearably tragic and heartbreaking by Kevin Pillay, chairman of the Malvern Community Policing Forum (CPF). “When I arrived on scene, it was tragic; the mom was hysterical; there was blood everywhere. It was just too sad; I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family of the child,” said Pillay.
As the family, church, and community mourn the loss of a young innocent life, her memory will serve as a reminder of the need for urgent action to tackle growing concerns of hijackings, killings, and robberies in the region.
