(The Post News)- Najwa Peterson, a 63-year-old convicted murderer who was found guilty of orchestrating the death of her husband, renowned musician Taliep Peterson, will be released on parole in November of this year.
According to previous reports, Peterson paid men to kill her husband at their house in Athlone, Cape Twon, in what seemed to be a botched robbery in December 2006.
In a media statement, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) stated that Peterson appeared before the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board (CSPB) on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, and was granted a November 27, 2024, parole placement date.
According to DCS, the ruling was made in compliance with Section 73 of the Correctional Services Act, which stipulates that the minimum sentence duration must be fulfilled before parole can be considered. The DCS added that the victims were involved in the parole hearing proceedings and were notified of the CSPB’s ruling.
On February 11, 2009, Peterson began serving her sentence after being convicted of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances for hiring a hitman to kill her husband and arrange a robbery.The department mentioned that Peterson has completed numerous rehabilitation programs and will now be engaged in pre-release programs that will prepare her for reintegration into society.
Moreover, the department stated that Peterson will continue to serve her sentence in community corrections, where she will be supervised in accordance with her parole requirements. For instance, Peterson cannot leave her magisterial area without notifying her parole officer, and she is also not permitted to speak to the media.
With the assistance of specialists, the department will continue to carry out Restorative Justice processes to help the victims of the crime committed by Peterson.
