(The Post New)- The Kruger 2 Canyons Biosphere has supported the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s carnivore projects, in August 2024 for their cheetah range expansion project in several reserves, which includes the stunning Karongwe Nature Reserve. Cheetahs were almost extinct in the country in the early 1930s. With the help of conservation efforts, the cheetah population has been increasing and has helped reintroduce cheetahs inro other African countries they had been previously extinct.
The carnivores of Africa face great danger as their habitats are destroyed and have lost safe spaces, habitat fragmentation by barriers or roads have also posed as a threat. With the barriers in place, it prevents the animals to reach other populations to breed, inevitably the animals would breed with close relatives, resulting in a loss of genetic diversity within their populations, which weakens their health and ability to evolve adaptations in order to survive environmental changes caused by climate change and impacts of humans
With the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s continuing to work with the Kruger 2 Canyons on Human-Wildlife Conflict incidents in the landscapes, the experts of the EWT and the monitoring that is continuous have provided vital information to reserves, landowners, local communities and tourists. The use of collars would help track movements of the Damage Causing Animals (DCAs) like wild dogs when they go hunting outside the reserves.
Entrapped remains continues to remain a serious issue in the landscape, which is the reason more hands and awareness are needed to protect the wildlife there.
