(The Post News)- A severe cold front sweeping across South Africa has brought hazardous conditions to various regions, prompting the N3 Toll Concession to close the N3 at Van Reenen’s Pass due to treacherous black ice formations.
Motorists have been advised to postpone travel in the area with immediate effect, as snowfall and plummeting temperatures render road surfaces slippery. Reports of trucks losing traction, particularly on uphill sections, have raised concerns.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a level 6 warning for disruptive snow, rains, and damaging winds, affecting parts of the country.
In the Eastern Cape, the Penhoek Pass between Komani and Jamestown has been closed due to heavy snowfall. Provincial Transport MEC spokesperson Makhaya Komisa cautioned motorists to drive carefully, as wet roads and snowfall pose significant risks.
Free State Weather Forecaster Lungile Makondo warned of a cut-off low weather system, resulting in very cold, wet, and windy conditions. A yellow level 2 warning for disruptive snowfall is in effect for the east and south of the Free State, along with an Orange Level 6 warning for extreme areas.
SEVERE WEATHER ALERT: MOTORISTS URGED TO EXERCISE CAUTION
The N3 Toll Concession has stopped traffic at the Tugela Plaza in KwaZulu-Natal and Harrismith South Interchange in the Free State.
As the cold front continues to bring hazardous conditions, residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow weather updates.
