(The Post News)- Just after posting a joke on Instagram about the severity of the situation on the N3 highway, where scores of motorists have been stuck due to heavy snowfall, some social media users take the renowned broadcaster and medical doctor, Dr Musa Mthombeni’s joke personally.
In his post, Dr Mthombeni posted a picture of him and his wife on the snow and said: “We are busy preparing and will be ready to represent South Africa in the 2026 Winter Olympics. We heard there’s a mess in the Free State, and some of you had to sleep in your cars and pee on the freeway. If you had carried your snowboard with you, you’d be fine! Anyway, enjoy your weekend and avoid visiting strangers because of the weather.”
Social media users interpreted his joke in different ways while understanding very well the snowfall situation could have ended up taking the lives of other people.
Thabang Lesibo, one of the social media users says other things in life are not worthy to joke with. He says some of the vehicles have no heaters to keep the passengers warm during the snowfall, but Dr Mthombeni took it lightly and made jokes about the lives of other people. Another social media user, Ishmael Lethetsa says Dr Mthombeni is a human being just like others. “Being a medical doctor doesn’t mean he could always post important things only, but he must also joke at some point.
Over the weekend, a severe cold front has brought snowfall to parts of the Free State and KwaZulu Natal highway between Harrismith and Tugela Toll, as well as the R617 between Kokstad and Underberg. The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) was assisting motorists stranded along the N3 Harrismith in the Free State. The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) was closely monitoring the N2 and N3 near Mooriver.
