(The Post News)- A specialized police team, in conjunction with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Vala Umgodi, dealt a significant blow to illicit mining operations in Limpopo.
On September 20, 2024, the joint force descended upon notorious mining hotspots in Ngove and Siyanda villages, catching illegal miners off guard. The cleverly planned ambush resulted in the arrest of five suspects, aged 25 to 51, linked to illegal mining activities.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba revealed that the team had arrived before the illegal miners, laying a successful trap. “Illegal miners arrived with equipment to mine illegally, but our team was ready.”
The operation, dubbed Operation Vaa Umgodi, targeted famous mining locations along the Klein Letaba River. The suspects were found attempting to extract sand without proper permits, violating the Immigration Act, and processing suspected precious minerals.
A substantial cache of equipment was seized, including shovels, spades, picks, hammers, torches, and heavy machinery. The arrests and seizures sent a strong message to those engaged in illegal mining.
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the teams involved. “This operation demonstrates our commitment to protecting the province’s natural resources and ensuring public safety.”
The police investigation is ongoing, aiming to dismantle the intricate networks of illegal mining syndicates. As the probe unfolds, authorities urge anyone with information on illegal mining activities to come forward.
This successful operation serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in combating illegal mining. The people of Limpopo can rest assured that their safety and natural resources are being protected.
