(The Post News)- The court has rescheduled the corruption case against Zizi Kodwa, the former Minister for Sports, Arts, and Culture, and his co-accused, Jehan Mackay, the former executive for Enterprise Outsourcing Holdings (EOH), to October 24.
Kodwa and Mackay appeared before the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg East on Thursday morning, September 3. Both the accused face charges of breaking the Prevention of Organised Crimes Act and the Prevention of and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.It is alleged that Kodwa received bribes amounting to R1.7 million from Mackay as compensation for government tenders between 2015 and 2016.
Zola Majavu, Kodwa’s legal representative, had previously threatened to file for a separate trial if the delays continued. However, in today’s court session, he stated that he had also made submissions to the Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to have the charges against his client withdrawn, similar to the representations previously made by Mackay’s legal team.
According to Majavu, the representations he made to the DPP on behalf of his client highlighted shortcomings within the state’s case, and whatever the outcome may be, he remains ready to argue against the charges faced by his client. In today’s sitting, the court was informed that the DPP needed additional time to decide on the submissions. Mackay’s legal attorney, Ian Small-Smith, told the court that on Wednesday he was informed to expect the DPP’s decision within two weeks. The magistrate stated that he was pleased with all the parties’ submissions and that the case was advancing at a respectable pace.
