The shooting and killing of the Rivoni Secondary School Principal in Gauteng has left open wounds in the education department.
(The Post News)- The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is deeply concerned about the shooting of the Rivoni secondary school male principal in Daveyton.
On Monday, 8 October 2024, the principal was fatally shot at Chris Hani Mall while attending a meeting related to a case involving one of his colleagues. Speaking on behalf of Education, Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, MEC Matome Chiloane said the passing of the principal left open wounds in the department.Â
Chiloane expresses his profound condolences to the loved ones of the deceased, stating that they are grieved by the unwarranted killing of a dedicated educator and leader in the education community. The Gauteng Department of Education has activated Psychosocial support services for those affected by this tragedy.
Meanwhile, on Monday, 7 October 2024, 42 learners from Relebogile secondary school in Carletonville were involved in a car accident. Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education, confirmed to The Post News that all learners were rushed to the nearby hospital following the crash, where six of them sustained injuries, and of the six, two suffered severe injuries.
According to Chiloane, the department is genuinely concerned about the impacted pupils’ well-being and will ensure that they receive the required medical attention. He further stated their thoughts and prayers are with the families during this difficult time, and they wish the pupils a rapid recovery.
