Dr. Nasiphi Moya, an ActionSA councillor, has been chosen as Tshwane’s new mayor, defeating the DA’s nominee 122 to 86.
(The Post News)- Dr. Nasiphi Moya, Action for South Africa’s Councillor, has been appointed as the new Mayor for the City of Tshwane. She was appointed to be the nation’s administrative capital by other councillors on October 9, defeating Cilliers Brink, the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) candidate, by 122 to 86.
In the past, she was the deputy mayor of the coalition that included the DA, Freedom Front Plus (VF+), African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
The African National Congress (ANC), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and other minority parties endorsed her candidacy after Brink was ousted on September 26th on a “motion of no confidence.” The ANC had proposed the motion after accusing Brink of not providing township services, which was supported by EFF and ActionSA councillors.
The ANC’s Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri addressed the media ahead of the vote and stated that after extensive discussion about the quality of the candidates and the brief amount of time they must resolve issues, the ANC agreed to back the candidacy of the current acting mayor, councillor Dr. Moya.
During her acceptance speech, she mentioned that she acknowledges that the City of Tshwane has been challenged by concern and instability in politics. Additionally, Moya vowed to break the cycle of uncertainty and restore stability to the city. Moya also assured Tshwane residents that she will not be the mayor of ActionSA or any other party, but the mayor of Tshwane, who will represent the residents of all the areas surrounding Tshwane.
