(The Post News)- According to Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, efforts are on to guarantee that the Premier Soccer League (PSL) adopts VAR (Video Assistant Referee).
Gayton McKenzie, the minister of sports, has admitted that South African Football Association and PSL will require government support since Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is expensive.
“The cost is R70 million to R80 million once off to install at all stadiums, and R70 000 per game to operate. These are the figures that we were told. We will investigate these amounts, VAR is crucial to have,” McKenzie wrote on X.
A VAR system installation costs roughly R4.9 million per stadium, or R78.4 million for 16 stadiums. With cup games excluded, 240 League matches per season would cost R16.8 million if the R70,000 per game to operate.
If indeed cost is confirmed, it would cost about R95 million to install and run for the first season.
“We want our football to become better and VAR can make it better. Our timeline is, this week we are meeting. We have no time to play here, we must lead this space and we are leading this space and as I said to you, we are meeting SAFA, after next week we are paying the first deposit, we are moving,” McKenzie told SABC Sport.
