Pretoria Zoo celebrates 125 years of conservation, science, and adventure.
(The Post News)- The National Zoological Garden in Pretoria, South Africa’s premier wildlife research, education, and tourism hub, marks a significant milestone—125 years of dedication to conservation, science, and adventure. As the only zoo with national status, it has spent over a century protecting and displaying South Africa’s rich biodiversity.
From October 17 to 31, 2024, visitors can enjoy exclusive anniversary specials. Each weekend, the first 125 visitors will receive free entry, and daily tickets will be 50% off. This presents a unique opportunity for all to explore the zoo at a reduced cost.
The zoo offers various daily activities designed to inform, educate, and entertain: school lessons for young learners, animal talks, and zoo adventure sessions featuring lion feeding, giraffe interaction, gorilla enrichment, and alligator feeding. These activities provide a closer look at the fascinating animals and emphasize the importance of conservation and animal care. The zoo’s ongoing renovation project, started in June 2022, nears completion. Renovations at 116 display enclosures are finished, with 15 more nearing completion. The upgrades ensure animals thrive in habit-appropriate enclosures.
According to Leslie Mudimeli, executive director of the zoo, the zoo does not only offer a place for families and guests to spend time with animals, but it is also a research organization that has been approved as a science center by the Department of Science and Innovation. The National Zoological Garden is home to over 4,200 animals, including endangered species. Its successful breeding program for vulnerable wildlife has yielded remarkable results, such as the birth of four Sun gazer Lizards in 2023.
Shonisani Munzhedzi, CEO of the South African National Biodiversity Institute, told the zoo’s pivotal role in conservation and public education. Leslie Mudimeli, executive director, highlighted the zoo’s research institution status. Nontsikelelo Mpulo, director for marketing communication and commercialization, invited the public to join the celebrations.
