SAPS Honors Vigilance and Dedication
The South African Police Service (SAPS) celebrated its ninth national excellence awards ceremony in Midrand, Gauteng, recognizing individuals and groups who demonstrated exceptional commitment and dedication during the 2022/23 fiscal year. Among the distinguished guests were key figures from SAPS, Police Minister Bheki Cele, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, and National Police Commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola.
At the ceremony, Constable Sgt Keshi Mabunda was praised for alerting authorities to suspicious activities in Bloemfontein, leading to the arrest of a dangerous criminal. Due to his vigilance, he was promoted to warrant officer and received a special award from the police minster.
Sergeant Keshi Benneth Mabunda, renowned for his efforts in combating insurance fraud, was also promoted to the rank of captain. His meticulous investigations not only resulted in the conviction of Rosemary Ndlovu but also led to the arrest of an individual linked to a murder case in North West.
Promoting Innovation and Professionalism in SAPS
Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, who serves as the police spokesperson, highlighted the importance of the awards in promoting innovation and excellence within the police force to guarantee continued professional service delivery to communities. The awards covered 47 categories, acknowledging accomplishments that ranged from administrative excellence to outstanding detective work.
The ceremony also honored officers like Sergeant Molwantoa Rapakgadi, a dedicated detective specializing in serial crimes and child pornography investigations. Rapakgadi’s relentless efforts resulted in numerous convictions, including 57 life sentences and over 3,000 years in prison for serial rapists.
Notable individuals like Lieutenant-Colonel Joe Coetzer and Lieutenant-Colonel Junior Santi were also recognized for their bravery and exceptional leadership. Coetzer received the National Commissioner’s special award for hs role in dismantling a cash-in-transit gang, despite being injured during the operation.
Santi, the operational commander of the Park road tactical response team in Free State, was named High-risk Member of the Year for his outstanding leadership, resulting in numerous arrests and significant seizures of counterfeit money.
Port Nolloth earns “Station of the Year” accolade, achieving a flawless 100% rating in crime prevention and exceeding targets. The ceremony highlights the valor and commitment of police officers in protecting communities and maintaining law and order.
