(The Post News)- Rory McIlroy ended his 2024 season in spectacular style, winning the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai and securing his sixth Race to Dubai crown. The Northern Irishman shot a final-round 69 at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course, finishing at 15-under-par, two strokes ahead of Denmark’s Rasmus Højgaard.
In a nail-biting finale, McIlroy gained a decisive advantage with a stunning wedge shot on the 16th hole, setting up a birdie. Despite pressure from Højgaard, who made an impressive 30-foot putt on the 17th, McIlroy’s composure on the final hole sealed his third DP World Tour Championship victory.
This triumph not only earned McIlroy $5 million but also matched the late Seve Ballesteros’ record of six Race to Dubai titles. Reflecting on the achievement, McIlroy acknowledged the challenges he faced throughout the year, including several near-misses in major tournaments. “This means a lot,” he said, adding that he remains motivated to surpass Colin Montgomerie’s record of eight Race to Dubai wins.
The win capped off a strong year for McIlroy, marking his fourth victory of the season. It underscored his enduring dominance in European golf, while Højgaard and other top performers secured PGA Tour cards for 2025, showcasing the growing competitiveness of the sport.
