The Boks are looking forward to improve their game in Perth this coming weekend.
Â
(The Post News)- The Springboks’ choices for this Saturday’s match against the Wallabies are daring in the context of the Rugby Championship, even though they will start with the same front row that played against Portugal.
Only one starting front-rower with fewer caps has entered a Rugby Championship Test for the Boks before. In 2021, Ox Nche, Joseph Dweba, and Wilco Louw had 16 caps combined. This Saturday, August 24, Johan Grobbelaar, Thomas du Toit, and Jan-Hendrik Wessels, with just 21 combined Test matches, will start together, despite Wessels and Grobbelaar having only one Test each.
Â
The three showed off their skills against the world’s 15th-ranked team, as one might anticipate, but this weekend’s task is a little more difficult.Â
Â
The Springboks will aim to replicate their set-piece dominance in Brisbane, which was key to their convincing victory. Fortunately, they will be bolstered by the return of experienced players like Malcolm Marx, Ox Nche, and Vincent Koch. However, it’s worth noting that the current Bok tight five have only thirty caps combined.
Â
Rassie Erasmus, the head coach, was quick to emphasise that his team still has 14 Rugby World Cup champions on it, even after making ten changes.Â
Â
Du Toit had played against Argentina just before last year’s World Cup, and he made his Bok comeback against Portugal in Bloemfontein last month.
Â
He made his debut in 2018 and has only played one Test against Australia since then.
Â
Lukhanyo Am is eager to re-establish his position among the Bok elite in the backline. His absence from the squad has been as lengthy as Du Toit’s.
Â
After his return, he organised and played a solid defence against Portugal, assisting the World Champions in going all out on the attack.Â
Â
Am is a gentleman, but against a Tier One team this time around, he will need to establish himself as an inside centre.
This will be his first start at the inside centre after 36 tests, although he will start next to Jesse Kriel.Â
Â
Damian de Allende needed rest due to his demanding play style, making it unrealistic to expect him to play 14 consecutive Tests, according to coach Rassie Erasmus. Handré Pollard, on the bench, is expected to slot in at 12.Â
Â
Aphelele Fassi, playing in his sixth Test and second in the Rugby Championship, is aiming to regain his place behind Damian Willemse and Willie Le Roux in the Bok lineup.Â
Â
Makazole Mapimpi, starting on Saturday, has lost his first-choice status on the left wing to Kurt-Lee Arendse but remains a strong scorer, with eight tries in his last six Bok appearances after a dry spell.
