(The Post News)- The Supreme Court of India has deferred the Kolkata rape and murder case, which was scheduled for Thursday, September 5. The cause of the delay has been attached to a notice issued by the top court stating that DY Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India, is not present in the courthouse.
‘’Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India will not be holding the Court on 05.09.2024 (Thursday). Hence, the sitting of the Chief Justice’s Court compromising Hon’ble Mr. Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Manoj Misra stands cancelled, and matters listed before this Bench will be taken up for hearing,” the notice reads. The next schedule for the hearing has not yet been announced.
Protests including hundreds of people from different walks of life assembled across Kolkata on Wednesday night to call for an immediate investigation and arrest those responsible for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor, Mounmita Debnath, at the state-run RG Kar hospital on August 9. Protesters are demanding immediate action towards perpetrators that committed this heinous crime.
However, the parents of Debnath have alleged that the hospital told them their daughter had committed suicide, and the state police attempted to bribe them and overturn the case. The Kalkota Police were also accused of trying to cremate Debnath’s body to destroy evidence and cover up the crime. As protesters from different walks of life continue to fight for immediate justice, the Supreme Court of India is still to rule to schedule the next court date.
