Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner, appeared in court on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, facing charges of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70.
Couple Found Dead
The couple was found dead in their Brentwood home on Sunday, December 14, with multiple stab wounds, sparking widespread shock and grief. Reiner’s attorney, Alan Jackson, cited medical reasons for postponing the arraignment until January 7, 2026.
Reiner remains held without bail at the Los Angeles County jail, wearing an anti-suicide smock. He faces special circumstances of multiple murders and using a dangerous weapon, a knife, potentially leading to a harsher sentence.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated that his office hasn’t decided whether to seek the death penalty. The Reiner family released a heartfelt statement, describing Rob and Michele as “more like our best friends than parents”.
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation is ongoing, with police investigating a possible motive. Reports suggest Nick Reiner had argued with his parents at a Hollywood party the night before the killings.
Reiner’s lawyer, Alan Jackson, has represented high-profile clients like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey. The case has sent shockwaves through Hollywood, with tributes pouring in for the Reiner couple.
Rob Reiner, a renowned filmmaker, and his wife Michele, a photographer, were found dead in their master bedroom, with lacerations consistent with a knife. Nick Reiner was arrested hours later in Exposition Park.
The Reiners’ children, Jake and Romy, expressed their grief, saying their parents were “our best friends”. The couple had been married for 36 years.
Nick Reiner’s history of substance abuse has been highlighted, with reports suggesting he co-wrote a film loosely based on his life. The motive behind the killings remains unclear.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division is leading the investigation. Reiner’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 7, 2026.
