(The Post News)- 61-year-old David William Moyes, a Scottish professional football manager and former player, is rumoured to be the leading candidate to replace the recently sacked Sean Dyche as manager of Everton Football Club. Dyche was dismissed on Thursday following a poor run of form that left the Toffees just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.
 Â
Moyes, who previously managed Everton for 11 years between 2002 and 2013, is reportedly interested in returning to Goodison Park. Sources suggest he would be open to an initial short-term deal until the end of the season. During his previous tenure, Moyes guided Everton to Champions League qualification and an FA Cup final. He has been out of work since leaving West Ham United last summer.Â
Dyche’s sacking came just hours before Everton’s FA Cup victory against Peterborough United. The decision to part ways with Dyche was made by the club’s owners, The Friedkin Group, after consultations with club executives. Despite respecting Dyche and his work at the club, they felt a change was necessary. Dyche himself reportedly indicated in a meeting with the owners that he felt he had taken the club as far as he could.Â
Besides Moyes, other names have been linked with the Everton managerial position. Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca, who recently left AC Milan, is also reportedly interested. Gareth Southgate is also admired by The Friedkin Group, but he is said to have reservations about taking a job mid-season. Southgate recently stepped down as England manager after Euro 2024.Â
Further details surrounding the dismissal of Sean Dyche as Everton manager and the immediate aftermath have also been surfacing. It clarifies that José Mourinho will not be considered for the role, despite being previously sacked by The Friedkin Group (Everton’s owners) as Roma manager. Similarly, there was no approach for Graham Potter before he took the West Ham job.
Following Dyche’s dismissal, club captain Seamus Coleman and under-18s coach Leighton Baines took temporary charge of the team for their FA Cup match, which they won 2-0. Players were only informed of Dyche’s sacking shortly before the game, during their pre-match meal. This late notice created a difficult atmosphere, with players expressing sadness at the situation but acknowledging that given the team’s performance and league position, a change was perhaps inevitable.
One player, Keane (likely Michael Keane), described the experience as unsettling and disruptive to their pre-match preparations. Everton’s next game is at home against Aston Villa on Wednesday, and it is still unclear who will be in charge for that fixture.Â
