SAWS Issued a Orange Level 5 Weather Warning
According to SAWS, a Orange Level 5 warning has been put in place. Affecting the northern regions of Gauteng, the central parts of Limpopo, and the Highveld of Mpumalanga. These areas are expected to experience heavy downpours, storm and excessive lightning, accompanied by strong, damaging winds.
“We urge residents to remain vigilant and take proactive safety measures. Following a Level 5 severe storm warning issued for Monday. The statement quotes that widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected. They will also be accompanied by heavy downpours, excessive lightning, damaging winds, and hail.
SAWS cautioned that these conditions could lead to flooding of low lying areas, susceptible roads and bridges. Due to both large quantities of small hail and occasional storm.
The intense lightning activity associated with the thunderstorms is also likely to disrupt communication networks and some municipal services. SAWS has urged residents in the affected areas to avoid open spaces, and remain indoors where possible to minimise risk.
Yellow Level 4 Warning Continues for KZN
SAWS has also issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for further regions across the country. Severe thunderstorms are expected over Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga as well as the north western parts of KwaZulu Natal. These storms could bring flooding, storm, damage and dangerous driving conditions caused by reduced visibility and slippery roads.
“Forecasts indicate widespread showers and intense thunderstorms across KwaZulu-Natal. With the eThekwini region expected to be significantly affected,” reads the statement,” said SAWS.
Authorities have advised motorists to exercise extreme caution. Avoid crossing flooded bridges and allow extra travel time due to the potential impact of the storm. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official channels as weather conditions may change rapidly throughout the day.
