(The Post News) – Businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala stunned Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee. He revealed he pays each of his 12–14 bodyguards R100,000 per month. This amounts to a staggering R2 million monthly security bill.
Matlala explained that he relies on a heavily armed protection detail because of the constant threats he faces. These are due to his business dealings and alleged involvement in high-level corruption networks.
He shared examples of having as many as 14 guards. These situations occurred while he handled large sums of cash. This underscores the high-stakes environment surrounding his activities.
A Figure at the Centre of Controversy
Matlala is no stranger to controversy. He is currently incarcerated at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre.
He is awaiting a high court trial set for January 2026. The trial involves numerous charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder. His name has repeatedly surfaced in allegations of police infiltration, corruption, and political interference.
Earlier testimony before the Ad Hoc Committee implicated Matlala. He was involved in attempts to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) in KwaZulu‑Natal. The efforts were allegedly made in collusion with senior political figures. During his testimony from Kgosi Mampuru Prison (where the committee held hearings), he made explosive allegations.
He claimed that he paid R500,000 to former police minister Bheki Cele. Cele has denied these claims. He asserted his interactions with Matlala were only to gather information. He also said they ensured proper police procedures were followed.
Matlala stated that the money was to get police “off his back.” This specifically involved the political killings task team (PKTT) after an aggressive raid on his home in December 2024.
Matlala also claimed Cele made further demands for money. These demands included requests to pay an invoice for his son. There were also requests to buy a house in KwaZulu-Natal. Matlala said his relationship with Cele soured after he stopped responding to these requests.
The revelation about his bodyguards adds another layer to the unfolding narrative. Hiring former special forces and task force operatives at such high salaries highlights immense personal wealth.
According to SABC News, ANC Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli has stressed that his testimony could help unravel the extent of criminal infiltration into South Africa’s justice system
