(The Post News) A devastating landslide in Indonesia’s West Java has claimed the lives of 23 soldiers, confirmed by a navy spokesperson on Tuesday. The soldiers were trapped during training exercises in Pasir Langu village, Bandung Barat region, when the landslide hit early on Saturday, triggered by heavy rains.
The village, located in a hilly area about 100 km southeast of Jakarta, was already on high alert due to the wet season. The 23 Marines were participating in training exercises for Indonesia-Papua New Guinea border patrols when the disaster struck, said First Admiral Tunggul, the Navy spokesperson.
Extreme Weather Conditions
“The incident occurred due to extreme weather conditions with heavy rainfall, which caused a landslide at the training site,” Tunggul explained. The death toll from the landslides has risen to 20, with 42 people still missing, according to Abdul Muhari, a spokesperson at Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency.
As of Tuesday afternoon, around 800 rescuers, military, and police personnel, along with nine excavators, have been deployed to find the missing people. Muhari said 685 residents of the stricken village had been evacuated to local government buildings.
Devastating Impact
The landslide is the latest disaster to hit Indonesia, following cyclone-induced floods and landslides on Sumatra island, which killed 1,200 people, destroyed homes, and displaced over a million residents two months ago. The country is prone to natural disasters, and the wet season often brings landslides and floods.
Rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate the missing people, with the support of military and police personnel. The area is challenging due to the hilly terrain and ongoing heavy rainfall.
Government Response
The Indonesian government has mobilized resources to support the rescue efforts and provide aid to affected families. The disaster mitigation agency is coordinating the response, with assistance from local authorities.
Indonesia has experienced several devastating landslides and floods in recent years, highlighting the need for improved disaster preparedness and response. The country is located in a seismically active region, making it vulnerable to natural disasters.
The international community has offered support and condolences to the people of Indonesia, with offers of assistance and aid. The government is assessing the damage and will provide updates on the situation.
Weather Conditions
The wet season in Indonesia is expected to continue, with heavy rainfall forecasted in the coming days. This may hinder rescue efforts and exacerbate the situation.
Tribute to the Fallen
The 23 soldiers who lost their lives in the landslide are being remembered for their bravery and dedication to serving their country. The government and people of Indonesia mourn their loss.
