The Post News The Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs in Limpopo reports that the death toll from the recent floods in the province has risen to 25. Spokesperson Amos Phago stated that the number of missing persons remains at three – one from Mbaula Village and two from Thulamela.
“The search and rescue teams are still on the ground conducting operations in various parts of the province where missing people have been reported,” Phago said. MEC Basikopo Magamu has extended his condolences to the bereaved families and reiterated his call on communities to remain vigilant by adhering to the safety tips issued by the government.
The national government has declared the floods affecting Limpopo and other provinces a national disaster. This classification enables organs of state across the three spheres of government to strengthen their support to disaster management structures and implement contingency arrangements.
Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring normalcy and rebuilding affected areas, focusing on creating more resilient infrastructure. The government will continue to provide support to affected communities and work towards mitigating the impact of future disasters.
Floods- Ongoing Response Efforts
Search and rescue teams, along with government officials, are working tirelessly to locate missing persons and provide assistance to those affected by the floods. Communities are urged to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines to minimize risks.
The Limpopo Provincial Government has set up a crisis center to coordinate response efforts and provide support to affected families. The center will also facilitate the distribution of relief supplies and services.
