(The Post News)- Vice President-elect JD Vance (R-Ohio) declared on Thursday that he will step down from his Senate position, taking effect at the beginning of Friday.
On Thursday, Vance submitted his resignation letter to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R) as he prepares for the coming four years in the White House.
DeWine, a Republican, will designate a successor for Vance, who completed just two years of his six-year Senate term. The designated senator will occupy Vance’s position until a special election occurs in 2026. A subsequent election will take place in 2028.
It’s uncertain when the governor will disclose Vance’s replacement. DeWine stated on Wednesday that an announcement “will be made shortly,” but a representative refused to give further information on Thursday. DeWine is set to participate in an event at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort on Thursday alongside governors from various states, as stated by his office.
Numerous Republicans showed interest in the Ohio Senate position, yet Lt. Gov. Jon Husted rose as a leading candidate and met DeWine at Mar-a-Lago last month. Sources had earlier informed some newspaper’s statehouse bureau that Husted is considering whether to accept the appointment or continue with his initial intention to run for governor in 2026.
On Monday, Congress confirmed the victory of Trump and Vance, a notable shift from four years earlier when a violent mob of Trump followers invaded the Capitol and interrupted the proceedings. Trump and Vance will swear in on Jan. 20, 2025.
