(The Post News)– Gogo Maweni, a well-known traditional healer and media personality, will remain in custody until her formal bail application on January 27. This decision was made after her brief appearance at the Protea Magistrates Court in Soweto on Monday, where she faced charges including alleged assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) in 2019.
Maweni’s arrest stems from an incident in December last year, where she allegedly assaulted a complainant with a bottle. The case had previously been closed due to difficulties in finding the complainant, but further investigations led to Maweni’s arrest. The courtroom was packed during Maweni’s appearance, with her family members looking anxious. Her attorney, Marcia Makuse, argued that the media should not broadcast the matter.
Marcia Makuse, Maweni’s attorney, said during the court proceedings that her client’s personal and professional lives might be negatively affected by the media’s request for permission to record and broadcast the session. The media was allowed to cover the case; nevertheless, after Magistrate Rozelle Khiye decided that the values of justice and media freedom overcame these reservations.
Maweni’s bail application has been set for January 27, and until then, she will remain behind bars. Police sources tell that she was apprehended in the Mondeor region following an intelligence operation carried out by the Gauteng Province Cold Case Investigation Unit. Officers pointed out that Maweni had a different ongoing matter from 2017 in addition to the charges related to the 2019 assault.
Furthermore, disturbing murder claims have surfaced, connecting her to several murder cases between 2020 and 2024.As the case unfolds, many are watching to see what will happen next. Will Maweni be granted bail, or will she remain in custody? The answer will have to wait until January 27.
