(The Post News)– Benny Gantz, a member of Israel’s war cabinet, said the Israeli military’s operations in Rafah will go ahead until it puts an end to the southern city and the entire Gaza Strip, or until Hamas releases the first hostages. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israel’s military operation in Rafah. It’s aimed at achieving twice the goals of returning the hostages held in Gaza and eliminating Hamas.
On Tuesday, the Israeli military took control of the Gazan side of the Rafah crossing, a needed entrance point for aid arriving from Egypt. Aid agencies showed their concerns after Israel seized the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing. Since the Hamas rocket attack near the facility on Sunday, May 5, which resulted in the killing of four Israeli soldiers, the Kerem Shalom crossing has been closed for aid deliveries.State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller argued earlier on Wednesday, May 8, that Israel has committed to reopening the Kerem Shalom crossing. But the crossing is still closed.
On the other hand, Israel demonstrated its point on May 7 when it launched air strikes, which left at least 26 people dead, including nine children. The leaders have given notice for weeks that an invasion of the southern Gaza City of Rafah is going to happen at some point in the future, although the US and others have publicly warned the the country that such a ground operation should not occur. President Joe Biden has also argued that the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should not go ahead with the plan to attack Rafah.
The Biden administration has argued for a plan to protect more than a million civilians who are sheltering in Rafah and avoid a growth in the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the coastal enclave. The country is determined to destroy Hamas, and the United States authorities suspended the shipment of bombs to Israel due to concerns over their potential use in a Rafah incursion, which was stopped last week. Israel was holding 1,800 bombs weighing 2,000 pounds and 1,700 bombs weighing 500 pounds.
The suspension happened over the weekend. However, further details of when the shipment will be transported to the country are not yet known. Despite the fact that the war still continues while the Israeli military is determined to finish Hamas, the negotiations for a ceasefire are still underway in the Egyptian capital with the hope that both parties will come to an agreement and put an end to the war, which is causing harm rather than good to the citizens.
Hamas officials urged an agreement reached with mediators covering the withdrawal of the occupation from the Gaza Strip. It has not accepted the deal proposed by Egypt and Qatar, saying it doesn’t agree as it’s far from meeting their demands.
