(The Post News)– The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has confirmed it has urgently launched an investigation following a “vile and disturbing” video circulating widely on social media that appears to show a Grade 10 learner from Milnerton High School in Cape Town being brutally assaulted.
The footage, which was reportedly recorded on October 17, has sparked immediate public outrage across the country as it reveals a younger male pupil being physically assaulted by a group of older learners.
The video shows several boys beating the Grade 10 learner with bats and sticks, seemingly celebrating the ordeal as bystanders watched. The nature of the assault, and the fact that it was recorded and shared, has led to calls for immediate and strict disciplinary action.
WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said the department is treating the matter with the utmost seriousness and has initiated a full-scale investigation into the incident. “Disciplinary action will be determined after investigation,” said Hammond.
Furthermore, the Department of Basic Education has confirmed that learners are receiving counseling. Meanwhile, parents and community members have been urged not to share the video further, as circulating it worsens trauma and violates dignity, but instead to submit any evidence directly to the school or the WCED to assist in the official investigation.
