(The Post News) – Eight people have been killed in massive vehicle crash involving a truck and a minibus taxi on the N3 near to the boarder between Free State and KwaZulu Natal.
N3CT Confirms The Crash
The crash took place in the early hours of Thursday, 30 October 2025, which resulted in closure of the N3 Route near Swinburne. N3CT confirmed the crash stating that, “The N3 Toll Route is currently CLOSED near Swinburne in the Free State following an earlier fatal crash between a minibus taxi and a truck. SAPS and emergency services are currently attending to the crash scene.
“Road users are warned to expect congestion and delays between Van Reenen and Swinburne for the duration of the cleanup and recovery operations. Please approach the area with caution.”
KZN MEC of Transport Says Scene is Currently Active
KZN MEC of Transport and Human Settlement spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya reported that the preliminary report from RTI indicates that eight people have died. “We are saddened by the death of eight people in a horrific accident along the N3, Van Reenen’s Pass. The MEC has indicated that the RTI team, working with SAPS accident unit, will be investigating to determine what could have happened,” Sibiya said.
He added that six injured people have been taken to Thebe Hospital in Harrismith for mediacl assistance. “Our efficient and energetic Road Traffic Inspectorate, together with the SAPS Accident Unit, have launched an investigation to determine the cause of this accident involving a truck and a minibus taxi,” MEC Spokesperson said.
Officials are urging motorists to be patient and to exercise extra caution.
