Somali Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi responds to Trump's derogatory comments, emphasizing Somalis' hard work and strength in the face of adversity.
Somali Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi has rejected US President Donald Trump’s latest insults, stating that Somalis will not accept being demeaned. Trump had described Somalia as a “disaster and Somalis as “filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime” during a rally in Pennsylvania.
Fiqi responded, saying Trump should focus on fulfilling his pledges to American voters rather than busying himself with Somalia. He expressed gratitude for US military support in fighting al-Qaeda-linked militants but rejected Trump’s characterization of Somalis.
The Somali people are known for their hard work and resilience, Fiqi said, highlighting their ability to overcome hardships and enemies. Trump had also referenced piracy off the Somali coast, saying it’s the only thing Somalis are good at.
Last week, Trump described Somalis as “garbage” at a cabinet meeting, saying they “just run around killing each other”. Fiqi condemned these remarks, emphasizing Somalis’ strength in the face of adversity.
Escalation Tension
Trump’s attacks on Somalis escalated after the shooting of two National Guard troops in Washington, leading him to promise freezing migration from poorer countries. An Afghan national has been charged with murder in the Washington shootings.
Trump has repeatedly called for the deportation of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a Democratic member of Congress and vocal critic, who became a US citizen after immigrating from Somalia 30 years ago.
The Somali defence minister’s response highlights the country’s pride and resilience in the face of international criticism. The US has provided military support to Somalia in its fight against al-Qaeda-linked militants.
Trump’s comments have sparked widespread condemnation, with many criticizing his racist and sexist language. The incident has put a spotlight on US-Somalia relations and immigration policies.
The Somali government has expressed its commitment to working with international partners to address security concerns and promote stability in the region. The US has a significant military presence in Somalia, aimed at combating terrorism
