(The Post News) Durban City FC confirmed on Monday that head coach Gavin Hunt has left the club. His departure is by mutual agreement following board discussions on the team’s future direction.
Hunt, a four-time PSL champion with previous stints at SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs. Joined the KwaZulu-Natal outfit in July as they embarked on their maiden campaign in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership. His appointment was hailed as a statement of intent for the newly promoted side. Which had clinched promotion after winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship earlier this year.
Progress Under Hunt
Durban City made an encouraging start to life in the top flight. It claimed a 2–0 victory over TS Galaxy in their debut Premiership fixture. It later climbed as high as third on the table after a spirited comeback win against Magesi in September. Hunt praised his squad’s energy and discipline during this period, emphasizing resilience and tactical flexibility.
However, inconsistency crept in as the season progressed. A run of mixed results including defeats to Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu. Saw the team settle in eighth place with 19 points from 14 matches at the time of his departure. The board cited the need for a new direction to stabilize performances before the Africa Cup of Nations break.
Betway Premiership Growth
Durban City’s return to the elite division coincided with significant off-field strides. The club secured high-profile partnerships, including Supertech Group as its official vehicle sponsor. Southern Sun as its hospitality partner, ensuring premium logistics and player welfare for the season. These deals reflect the growing commercial appeal of the Betway Premiership and Durban City’s ambition to establish a top-flight presence.
Chairman Farook Kadodia reaffirmed this vision, “this was a mutual decision, taken with the club’s best interests at heart. We thank Gavin for his dedication and service. Our focus now is on building a competitive side with the future in mind.”
Assistant coach Pitso Dladla will take interim charge for Wednesday’s clash against Orbit College before the AFCON break. Giving the board time to appoint a permanent successor aligned with its long-term strategy.
