King Charles III poured a “perfect” pint of Guinness at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in London’s Covent Garden, marking his first public visit since sharing “good news” about his cancer treatment progress.
The King’s visit was filled with festive cheer as he surprised shoppers with a “Merry Christmas” and impromptu handshake in the rain. He even joked with carol singers, saying they must be “moonlighting from the Royal Opera House”.
King’s Effort
Charles was guided by Guinness experience ambassador Leo Ravina, who taught him the art of pouring the perfect pint. The King was instructed to tilt the glass at 45 degrees and wait 60-70 seconds for the beer to settle.
Ravina praised the King’s effort, saying “that’s a perfect pint of Guinness”. Charles humbly replied, “If you say so,” as he wiped away a foamy Guinness mustache.
The King seemed less impressed by a hi-tech beer-printing machine, but enjoyed sampling unusual beers, including an apricot-flavored brew. He visited the 232 Bar, named after the temperature for roasting barley.
Charles toured the microbrewery, learning about the beer-making process, and met young people training for the hospitality industry. He also attended a Christmas-themed food market.
Movie director Gurinder Chadha, known for “Bend It Like Beckham,” was among the guests. She shared that the King requested a copy of her film “Christmas Karma” for Sandringham’s Christmas viewing.
A Royal Visit
Nik Jhangiani of Diageo welcomed the royal visit, saying pubs and restaurants are the “heartbeat of the hospitality sector”.
The Guinness Open Gate Brewery is a £73m investment, featuring a microbrewery, visitor experience, restaurants, and shops. It will create 250 jobs and attract half a million visitors annually.
The King braved the rain to meet the public, chatting with a couple about keeping their baby warm. His visit showcased his festive spirit and support for the hospitality industry.
