Italian authorities have taken a significant step in combating terrorism by arresting nine individuals suspected of raising approximately €7 million for Hamas over two years. The funds were allegedly collected as humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians but were instead diverted to the militant group through a complex fundraising network.
The suspects face accusations of financing operations that contributed to terrorist activities. Police have seized over €8 million in assets as part of the investigation, which was launched following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack in southern Israel.

The operation involved a joint effort between Italy’s counter-terror police and financial police. Investigators uncovered a sophisticated fundraising system with headquarters in Genoa and branches in Milan.
Individuals Arrested In Connection To Hamas Funding
The arrested individuals allegedly collected donations intended for Gaza’s civilian population, but more than 71% of these funds were redirected to Hamas’s coffers. These funds reportedly financed the group’s military wing and supported families of suicide bombers and those detained for terrorism.
One of the arrested suspects, Mohammad Hannoun, is the president of the Palestinian Association in Italy. Hannoun has previously denied allegations of financing Hamas, calling them a lie.
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi praised the police operation, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the presumption of innocence at this stage. The investigation is ongoing, aiming to uncover the full extent of the fundraising network.
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani hailed the operation as a significant blow to Hamas financing from Italy. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini called for identifying and prosecuting all Hamas financiers.
The arrests have raised concerns about humanitarian aid being used to fund terrorist activities. This highlights the complex nature of terrorist financing and the need for international cooperation.
