The Post News– The Stormers are set to welcome back powerhouse No 8 Evan Roos for their trip to Durban to face the Sharks in the United Rugby Championship (URC) this Saturday. Stormers assistant coach Rito Hlungwane believes Roos’ return provides a significant boost to their chances of redemption after last week’s 30-19 defeat to the Sharks.
Evan Roos’ Impact on the Team
Hlungwane addressed a squad currently resembling a casualty ward, with captain and lock Salmaan Moerat “highly unlikely” to feature this weekend due to a toe injury. However, Roos and lock Adre Smith have returned to the training pitch, giving the team a much-needed lift. “Evan is definitely someone we missed,” Hlungwane said. “Evan Roos is very powerful, has a high work-rate and keeps us going forward”.
Addressing Lineout Lapses
The Stormers’ lineout, usually a pillar of their game, stuttered under the Sharks’ pressure last week. Hlungwane credited the Sharks’ defensive pressure but also pointed the finger at their own execution, citing skew throw-ins and massive communication breakdowns. “It was definitely not the standards that we usually chase,” he admitted.
Psychological Advantage
Hlungwane views the back-to-back fixtures against the same opposition as a psychological advantage for the Stormers, who are seeking redemption. With only seven days to correct their course, the Stormers can quickly deal with the challenges they faced and fix their mistakes. “It gives you an opportunity to quickly deal with the challenges you faced and fix the mistakes instead of waiting three or four months for another crack at them,” Hlungwane explained.
Preparation is Key
The Stormers will look to bounce back against the Sharks, who have won four of six under interim coach JP Pietersen. The match kicks off at 5pm on Saturday at Kings Park Stadium in Durban.
