A daring cash-in-transit heist unfolded on the R28 in Mohlakeng, Randfontein, yesterday afternoon, leaving authorities scrambling for answers. A group of approximately 12 suspects, armed with automatic rifles, targeted a security vehicle, making off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The Heist Unfolds
According to police reports, the suspects, traveling in a green Toyota bakkie, rammed the cash van on the busy provincial route during peak afternoon traffic. The security guards were ordered to exit the vehicle, and shots were fired before the van was bombed.
Eyewitnesses describe the scene as chaotic, with residents gathering around the bombed-out cash van. “It was like something out of a movie,” said one witness. “I heard the shots and saw the smoke, and then people started running away.”
Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that no injuries were reported, but the suspects made off with a significant amount of cash. The suspects fled the scene in a white Mercedes-Benz and a white Chery.

The police are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation. Captain Sibeko stated that the incident is being treated as a high-priority case, and investigators are working tirelessly to track down the suspects.
