(The Post News)- Russian warships concluded their five-day visit and departed from Havana’s harbour on Monday, June 17.
The previous Wednesday, Chief Naval Officer Gorshkov’s frigate, a patrol boat, a fuel transport, and the Kazan, a nuclear-powered submarine, arrived in Havana harbour with a 21-gun salute.
During their stay, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel visited the frigate on Sunday, noting its capability with hypersonic rockets that can exceed speeds of 6,000 miles (9,656 kilometres) per hour.
“It is the expression of the strong and longstanding ties of friendship, brotherhood, and cooperation that exist between our peoples, governments, and Armed Forces,” expressed the president.
Both Cuba’s defence service and the US confirmed that the presence of the ships did not pose a threat to the region. Nevertheless, the Pentagon deployed its own nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine to the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, located approximately 500 miles (804 kilometres) southeast of where the Russian ships were anchored.
US authorities have shown they were checking the visit. Cuba’s Bad Habit Remote Serve, Carlos Fernandez de Cossio, expressed that the Cuban government opposed this idea with the entry of the US submarine.
“Maritime visits to a nation are ordinarily the result of a welcome, but this was not the case,” clarified Fernandez de Cossio.
“We don’t just like the nearness in our domain (of a submarine) of having a place for a power that keeps up an official and viable arrangement that’s antagonistic against Cuba,” he said.
Both Cuba and Russia stated that the operation reflects the longstanding friendship between their nations and occurs within the “framework of international cooperation” that exists between them.

Moscow views the deployment of warships in waters near the island nation as a demonstration of strength, even though the two countries have been allies for a long time.
The Russian move comes at a touchy time for Washington and Moscow, as it was weeks after US President Joe Biden concurred to authorise Ukraine to assault interior Russia with American weapons.
